We Don't Believe Educators Have Summers "Off"

A Thank You to Calgary Teachers & School Staff

As another school year comes to a close, families across Calgary are celebrating report cards, graduations, concerts, awards, and all the milestones that mark the end of another incredible year. It's a season of reflection, pride, and excitement for what's next. At Connected Family Counselling, we love celebrating those moments too. Children work incredibly hard, and they deserve every high five, hug, and proud photo.

But while everyone is celebrating what children accomplished this year, we'd like to take a moment to celebrate the people who helped make those accomplishments possible.

Every day, we work alongside children, teens, parents, and caregivers, and one thing becomes abundantly clear: children rarely succeed on their own. Behind every report card is a community of caring adults who have quietly invested in that child's growth. Teachers, educational assistants, school counsellors, administrators, librarians, office staff, custodians, coaches, lunch supervisors, and countless others help create the kind of environment where children can learn, grow, and thrive.

The truth is, education has never been just about academics.

As child and family therapists, we know that children learn best when they feel safe, seen, and like they belong. Before a child can focus on reading, writing, math, or science, their nervous system is asking a much more important question: "Am I safe here?" Every day, educators answer that question in hundreds of small, seemingly ordinary ways. They notice when a child isn't themselves. They remember whose cat passed away over the weekend. They know who needs a different seat to stay regulated, who forgot their lunch, who benefits from a movement break, and who simply needs one adult to believe in them before they can believe in themselves.

These moments never appear on a report card, but they often become the moments children remember most. Children may not remember what they scored on Friday's spelling test, but they will remember the teacher who greeted them by name every morning. They'll remember the educational assistant who helped them through a difficult day, the coach who reminded them they were capable, or the resource teacher who helped them find the words for feelings they didn't yet understand. Long after the details of an academic lessons fade, children remember how the adults around them made them feel.

That kind of work is both meaningful and demanding. When the final bell rings, the work doesn't simply end. There are assignments to mark, lessons to plan, families to connect with, concerts to organize, clubs to facilitate, teams to coach, classrooms to prepare, and students to think about long after everyone has gone home. It is work that requires patience, creativity, flexibility, compassion, and an extraordinary capacity to care for others day after day.

Which is why we don't believe educators have summers "off."

We believe summer is often the first opportunity they've had in months to catch up on themselves. It's a chance to finally book the dentist appointment they've postponed, return to therapy, spend uninterrupted time with their own families, reconnect with friends, read a book that has nothing to do with lesson planning, and simply rest. Not because they've earned it through perfection, but because people who spend their days caring for others deserve time to care for themselves too.

If we were writing report cards for educators, ours would be refreshingly simple.

Care: A+
Helping children feel like they belong: A+
Patience: A+
Showing up on the hard days: A+
Making a lifelong difference in the lives of children: A+

To every teacher, educational assistant, school counsellor, administrator, librarian, office administrator, custodian, coach, lunch supervisor, and every other member of a school community: thank you. Thank you for the conversations no one else heard, the encouragement no one else saw, and the countless moments that never made the report card but shaped a child's confidence, resilience, and sense of belonging.

At Connected Family Counselling, we believe that caring adults change lives. We see the impact every day in our work with children and families across Calgary. The relationships children build with safe, supportive adults at home, at school, and in their communities become the foundation for resilience, emotional wellbeing, and lifelong learning.

As you step into summer, we hope you give yourself the same care you've so generously offered everyone else this year.

And if an educator has made a difference in your life or your child's life, don't let the school year end without telling them. Share this article, write them a note, or simply say, "Thank you." Those words may mean more than you'll ever know.

Thank you - CFC Team
